the soundtrack to Passage

If you download Passage (
hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/) and open it up and look inside of the "music" directory, you will see this image. Apparently the soundtrack is encoded in the pixels of a targa file.
By poking the file a bit I've figured out the encoding (blue is ignored, red and green the two stereo channels, brightness is velocity, each lane controls a different instrument). Turns out the synths are polyphonic! Here is what the original music sounds like after I transcribed it, pixel-by-pixel, into Reason and threw in some approximate waveforms and crunchy filters:
adamsmith.as/games/spinward/passage-resynth.mp3
Now I'm quite interested in "reskinning" Passage to make my own game (with a new soundtrack of course). I'm thinking of seeing how close I can turn it into a 4X game by only mucking with pixels. Surely a civilization-scale story of galactic exploration and alien alliances is within the scope of the existing rules.
